Rabies is 100% preventable, and yet it still claims a life every nine minutes, primarily in underserved communities. Our mission is simple but urgent: eliminate rabies at its source through vaccination, education, and surveillance – with collaboration at our core.
In this blog, we’re excited to share some updates on the progress made over the past few months, from an expanding programme of activities in Kerela, to a dual prevention project in Tanzania, and an emergency response campaign in Cambodia. Keep reading to learn more.
We have been working in Kerala, providing technical support to the Government on rabies control, since 2023. A pilot vaccination campaign took place in 2024 where over 3,000 dogs were vaccinated against rabies in Kochi, and there have also been surveillance and educational activities conducted across the state.
From 24th - 28th November 2025, an intensive five-day campaign was delivered in Kochi. Working alongside our project partner, Animal Rescue Kochi, we successfully administered rabies vaccinations to over 7,800 dogs.
An additional element of the campaign was a large-scale awareness drive that reached thousands of students and community members, marking a significant milestone in the programme’s outreach.
Activities included educational sessions in schools and colleges, seminars, children's rallies, painting and other competitions, street plays, a rabies fun run, digital float, doggy float, and health worker seminars - bringing rabies awareness directly into communities.
Overall, our educational activities reached over 25,000 students, over 2,500 teachers, and more than 6,700 community members.
This campaign marks an important step forward for rabies control in Kerala, strengthening prevention efforts through coordinated vaccination and community education.
To protect families facing a rising threat of rabies in refugee camps along the Cambodia-Thailand border, we launched an emergency vaccination and community education campaign.
The first element of the campaign was a three-day vaccination project in partnership with the General Directorate of Animal Health and Production. Two mobile vaccination teams were deployed to the refugee camps of Wat Chansy Samaki Ratanaram in Koub Commune, Ou Chrov District, where we administered 496 life-saving rabies vaccines to dogs.
The second element was a rabies awareness campaign with sessions focusing on the dangers of rabies, how to avoid dog bites, and the importance of seeking urgent post-exposure vaccination following an animal bite. Sessions were successfully delivered to approximately 7,500 refugees at multiple camp sites in partnership with Banteay Menchey Provincial Health Department.
Responsive campaigns like this are vital to protect communities during periods of displacement, when access to healthcare and veterinary services is often limited and the risk of rabies can rise. By combining rapid-response vaccination with clear, practical education, we can reduce immediate danger, prevent avoidable deaths, and strengthen community awareness at a time when people are already facing immense uncertainty.
Each year, we assemble a veterinary taskforce, compromising of local staff and veterinary volunteers to offer sterilisation and rabies vaccinations, working with our partner charity, Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue.
Our vaccination teams provided accessible veterinary care in the form of free rabies vaccinations, by travelling to different communities to provide this preventative treatment. Through a combination of static point clinics, door-to-door and roaming, we protected dogs against this deadly disease, while also protecting the communities they live amongst. Teams worked hard to achieve the crucial 70% vaccination coverage needed for herd immunity, and this year vaccinated over 11,400 dogs.
Additionally, our education team delivered rabies prevention lessons to 48,979 children - empowering them with the knowledge to protect themselves and their communities against this cruel disease.
Vaccination and sterilisation together creates a safe, stable, and healthy animal population, which is the best way to reduce canine and human rabies cases. Over this two-week campaign our veterinary team performed 480 spay/neuter procedures – providing a long-term solution.
Every month, we’re reaching more communities with life-saving rabies prevention.
None of this would be possible without the dedication of our field teams, partners, and supporters, who know that a world free from rabies is within reach.
