Mission Rabies
Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka rabies is prevalent among the canine population and remains a serious concern for the island.

Project overview

Rabies remains an underreported disease in many developing countries. We have been working in Sri Lanka since 2015, and – in collaboration with local partner charity Dogstar Foundation – we ran a pilot vaccination campaign in Negombo.

Since then, we have vaccinated dogs across three districts – Negombo, Katana and Wennappuwa – vaccinating over 21,000 dogs. At the beginning of 2021, we were invited to be the lead consultant for the National Strategic Plan for the elimination of dog mediated human rabies in Sri Lanka.

We are committed to continue to support the Sri Lankan authorities in their rabies control programme. Government collaboration is integral to our project success – through sharing knowledge and practical training we can ensure the sustainability of our outreach projects.
